TMC Reef Bio React puts Media into a Spin

TMC has launched a novel kind of media reactor called Reef Bio React 2.0. In essence, Reef Bio React is a fluidised media reactor, but it moves the media in an unconventional way (at least by other media reactor standards,) by spinning it, resulting in both highly effective exposure to the water and its nitrogenous waste, while looking pretty mesmerising at the same time.

Two models

There are two models of Reef Bio React – the S and M. The S is 235x75x200mm and comes with a ten-speed adjustable 500lph DC pump that uses just 2-9 watts. The M is 250x90x225mm and comes with a 1000lph, 3-10 watt DC Reef Pump. Both are suitable for pretty much any media which will fluidise, but my recommendation would be either Bio Pellets for nitrate and phosphate control or a plastic media like K1 for tackling ammonia and nitrite in both fresh and saltwater systems. I’ve long been a fan of fluidised filters as all the media is constantly exposed to both oxygen and dissolved waste – perfect for bacteria colonisation – while also being self-cleaning. This type of reactor will also appeal to the enterprising aquarist who will no doubt have myriad thoughts on what else they could put inside it, and spin.

The only downside is having to hide the Reef Bio React in a sump and cabinet when its visual appeal is good enough to serve as a water feature in its own right.

They’re priced at £129.99 and £149.99 respectively.
