Red Sea ReefRun G2 DC pumps are quieter, more efficient, and Stand Alone

Red Sea has launched a second generation of return pumps called ReefRun G2 DC Pump. As the name suggests these new pumps are DC, but even quieter and more energy efficient than the the G1 models, and importantly, these can be run and controlled on their own by way of a built-in, wired controller, or hooked up to the ReefRun Dual Controller for enhanced wireless control via the excellent ReefBeat app.

The G2 comprises four models—the 4000, 6000, 8000, and 12,000—each drawing a maximum of 38, 56, 73, and 105 watts, respectively. Each comes with a 10’ long cable and metric and imperial pipe fittings. The volute can rotate 180 degrees for a more flexible hose connection, and the new clips enable impeller access in seconds.

They’re priced at £139, £179, £229 and £269.00 respectively.

What we think

Every pump should be as quiet as possible, and with energy prices going up again in April 2025, we welcome any reduction in running costs too. The ReefRun G2 means that you don’t have to buy the Dual Controller this time or use the ReefBeat app, opening up some quality DC pumps to a wider market and improving pricing, while making an upgrade available in the future for those who crave it.

The Dual Controller will run either 2 x G2, a G2 and a G1 return pump, or a G1/G2 return pump and a G1 DC skimmer pump. But if you don’t require any of that, it’s a wired, controllable, standalone DC return pump in its own right, and it comes in both smaller and larger models than the generation before it.

All very welcome changes.
