Swallow Aquatics Announces Move: 50 Years in Rayleigh
Swallow Aquatics in Rayleigh, Essex, is to move location after 50 years trading. The aquarium and water gardening chain made the announcement on social media that, if planning permission is accepted, supermarket chain Lidl will buy the site in 2026, and that Swallows will look for another location nearby to carry on trading from.
“Dear Valued Customer,
We have some important news to share regarding the future of our operations. After 49 years of service since 1976, we have reached an agreement to sell our RAYLEIGH site on London Road to Lidl GB, pending planning approval.
As we prepare for this transition, we are actively seeking a new, smaller site within a 5-mile radius of our current location. Rest assured, it remains business as usual for now, and our services will continue uninterrupted during this period.
Before our move in 2026, we are thrilled to announce that we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary next year. This milestone is a testament to the support and loyalty of customers like you. We hope you will join us in commemorating half a century of service and community engagement.
We will keep you updated with any developments regarding the relocation process. Your continued support is greatly appreciated as we embark on this exciting new chapter.
Warm regards,
Directors at Swallow Aquatics”
Half a century in aquatics
At 50 years old, Swallow is one of the oldest and most established aquatic stores in the UK and has weathered many storms and challenges to the aquarium industry. As is often the case with established garden centres, once out-of-town sites become surrounded by housing developments and, as such, become attractive for further, lucrative housing developments or for supermarkets wishing to serve the new local catchment.
Swallow Aquatics runs sites in Rayleigh, East Harling, Gravesend and Colchester, and describes the existing Rayleigh site as the Jewel in the Swallow Aquatics crown. The chain provides aquarium, pond, reptile, and pet supplies both in-store and online.
