RVS Fishworld Lands Triple Dorsal Triggerfish!

RVS Fishworld Inc. is the champion of finding the weird and wonderful fish that grace the Philippines. All of which are net caught and sustainably collected of course! This week they received a rather fascinating Red Tooth/ Niger triggerfish, Odonus niger, from Subic, Zambales with what appears to be a secondary spine preceding the usual secondary dorsal fin.

It will be interesting to see how this fish develops over time in captivity but it’s very likely that this feature will be retained owing to the likely genetic nature of this unusual aberrance. A three-dorsal trigger is not something that we believe has been recorded before in captivity or in the wild but we would be interested to know of any other examples that readers have to share on this matter if any.
